JOINING US FOR THE AUTUMN WITH NCS?
Autumn can be the most beautiful time in the mountains and perfect for a personal and team Challenge. Our Autumn programs run in Ullswater Valley from the village of Patterdale and Glenriding. The adventure is all about meeting your team and sharing some amazing adventures with them. Your program will consist on loads of Challenges from Climbing and Canoeing to night lines or climbing the peaks of the northern fells. Along the way you will also get the chance to try mindfulness exercises, wild swim and traditional story telling. We won't tell you everything as part of the experience is discovering the challenges as a team!
In case you're joining us this autumn as a participant or a member of staff we've prepared some answers to frequently asked questions...
Where will we be staying?
What should I bring?
You will be staying in either the Mountain village of Patterdale at Patterdale Youth Hostel or the beautiful Helvellyn Hostel. You will share rooms with your fellow program members with full facilities provided. Mobile charging is available - although it maybe good to unplug and reconnect with the 'wild' you! Patterdale is at the end of Lake Ullswater nestled in the mountains with amazing views. The Valley is home to Red Squirrels, Red Deer and Otter as well as being rich in legends and folk lore.
Everything for the activities is provided including sleeping bags, waterproofs and boots. In October the weather can be very variable so we recommend lots of warm clothes and bring a towel or two - fleece layers a woolly hat and gloves are a good idea. If you want to bring your own sleeping bag or kit thats great. There are tuck shops and Epic stash available at the centre so if you want to bring a sensible amount of money thats cool.
What do I do if I have specific medical/dietary or support needs?
When you apply let The Challenge know all the details and we work closely with them to ensure you get everything you need. All our food is locally sourced - we do all we can to minimise the environmental footprint of our programs. All our staff are trained not only as instructors but as first aiders, every week also has mental health first aiders. We are licensed by the adventure activities licensing authority so you can be assured you're in good hands.
Im looking forward to it but have to admit I'm a bit nervous!
That's normal, these programmes are meant to be challenging! At Epic we believe people are best outdoors and just the right amount of challenge teaches us loads about ourselves. But its all challenge by choice, our instructors know how to give you just the right amount of challenge but ensure your still having fun and making amazing memories. Imagine waking up in 50 years and being the same person you are today - sounds scary to us - challenge yourself!
